Partners in Education

"The dance company is difficult to sustain, but I do so because it has become a place where people can be developed: from children to adults, from students to teachers, from alienated seekers to members of a community." - Bill T. Jones

The Partners in Education (PIE) initiative provides a series of formalized education and public programs dedicated to shaping New York City's cultural and civic agenda. PIE is designed to meet the needs of three distinct populations: 1.) young people; 2.) adult participants; and 3.) rising dance artists. The PIE initiative includes the following goals and programs:

  • The Company's focus on collaborative, idea-driven dance is rich with potential for students at any stage of development. Our Young Minds and Movers program puts equal emphasis on learning, creating, and investigating dance as a meaningful form of personal and group expression. Classes and programs are available for students with no prior movement experience or those already pursuing training in dance;
  • A main component of the Company's education programming is our work with higher education. By engaging with student artists, we are able to contribute to their intellectual and artistic development. In the University setting, we are able to share ways to collaborate across disciplines, investigate new ideas, and advance the discussion between the world of art and the world of ideas.;
  • Licensing works from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company provides universities with the opportunity to engage in a well-rounded, extensive learning experience rooted in a significant work from the company's repertory. Our program is shaped by the core belief that a work of art should provide students and community with the opportunity to learn about process, values, skills, and motivating ideas, as well as provide performance opportunities for select dancers.
  • To build a professional training program that offers a series of Master Classes and Workshops in New York City, tour cities, and during residencies.

Through PIE, the Company is developing new strategies for serving the public that encourages intriguing dialogue and educational exchange. Please join with us in making an investment in PIE as we build vital programs that will serve thousands of people of all ages each year.

◊ Dancing in a House Divided
June 8, 2010

Slightly jet-lagged and certainly disoriented by a two hours drive thru a sun-blasted landscape - checkpoints and roadwork, fields spotted with workers, scattershot clusters of houses and errant donkeys - several dancers, my company's Associate Artistic Director and I finally arrived in the Palestinian town of Jenin.
